1858 envelope with original enclosure datelined "Schanghay da 30 1858 Apr" to Hamburg "pr oberland Mail", carried privately to Singapore, showing "Singapore/P.O." double-ring datestamp, "Pays Etr. v. Suez/Amb. C" c.d.s (19.6) in red, and on reverse "Hamburg/Th & T" and "KDOPA/Hamburg" c.d.s. (14.6); the postage from Alexandria was 85c. or Thurn and Taxis 7sgr., with 11.25sgr. or Hamburg 15sch. for the rate to the Danish P.O. in Hamburg and 4sk. inland rate representing a total of 52 sk., the transit to Germany was charged at 4.25 sgr., Fine early cover from a Treaty Port to Germany.

1860 (c.) envelope front and part back from Swatow to Apenrade, Schleswig-Holstein "via Trieste", showing oval "Forwarded by/Hirschfeld & Co./Swatow" sender's handstamp in red, "Hong Kong/C" (30.1) and red "DD/London" (7.3) transit c.d.s. on reverse, rated "60" (sk.) for letter from Egypt via England, "10" (décimes) for letter from Egypt by Austrian ship, and Prussian charge "12" sgr. corresponding to "16" Hamburg Schillinge or "60" skillings, some cover tears. Fine and exceptionally early cover from Swatow.

Swatow did not become a Treaty Port until the Treaty of Peking in 1860. Very little early mail is recorded from Swatow, which did not have a packet agency opened until late 1859, and a consulate, which also handled postal matters, only established in early 1860. According to Webb, no covers were known from Swatow before 1866.

1871 (Feb.) envelope from Tientsin to Rossleben (21.3) via Kiachta (9.2) and Moscow (15.16.3), endorsed "pr. Overland Mail via Trieste" and corrected to "via Kiachta", oval "A. Cordes & Co./Tientsin" sender's handstamp in red, "Aus Russland/über Bur. XI Edk. Brg./Franco" double-ring ds (30.3) in red, manuscript "Paid" applied at origin; there were originally Russian stamps on reverse which would have paid the rate from Russia to North Germany, however, these were torn away, probably at the Russian border with only sheet margins remaining over which has been written "China" in red crayon and two strikes of the arrival c.d.s. applied. A remarkable cover, being one of the earliest usages known from the Russian Post Office in China.

Under the Treaty of Tientsin signed in 1858, the Russian Embassy in Peking was authorized to operate a monthly postal service to Kiachta for official and ecclesiastical mail. The Treaty of Peking (1860) gave the Russian Merchants' Guild the right to operate a private post, which also undertook the transmission of official mail from the Russian Embassy. A similar office was opened in Tientsin at the British Concession. In 1870, this private post was absorbed by the Russian government and an Imperial Post Office established. Prior to 1874, postage across North China and Mongolia was paid in cash, and then from Russia to Germany by Russian stamps applied at the Consulate and pen cancelled.

(3.4) and "Hong-Kong/Marine-Sorter/Singapore to/Hong Kong/My 3 10 75" double-ring datestamp, framed "P.D." in red, rated "15" and "6¾" (groschen)= 60 pfennige, the ½gr pair has tiny corner faults at top, and there is small portion of flap at back missing, Very Fine and wonderful mixed issue franking with three different issues; from the Ritter correspondence; of the highest exhibition calibre.
