Honolulu * U.S. Postage Paid * Mar. 15, bold strike of red c.d.s. on small 1856 cover to Brooklyn N.Y., full "San Francisco Cal. 21 Apr" c.d.s. struck twice with matching "Paid 12" handstamp, with original 1856-dated enclosure, some slight overall toning and wear, Very Fine strike.

Enclosure is a 4-page family letter that mentions having to get firewood by going "up a mountain about 2 miles and then finding nothing but small birches some 6 or 12 inches through & about 6 feet long which we call wood"; also mentions the "school at Punahou".

1. May 18, 1865 to Saxony, Germany with single 30¢ paying the 28¢ Prussian closed mail rate plus 2¢ ship fee, Ex-Brigham, Jessup, Haas, Paliafito, Martin (sold recently at auction for $45,000).
2. Dec. 15, 1865 to Copenhagen, Denmark with 30¢ and 1¢ paying the 31¢ Prussian closed mail rate, Ex-Tows, Aall, and DuPuy (the cover offered here).
3. Sep. 25, 1867 to Messr. Macondray & Co. in San Francisco with single 30¢ paying triple 10¢ steamship rate, Ex-Honolulu Advertiser.
