Kalaupapa Leper Colony, 1¢ red (UX1) postal card with "Kalaupapa Mars. 9 1893" dateline to Father Clement at the Catholic Mission in Honolulu, message in French, cancelled by inter-island steamer with target cancellation, message side with "Honolulu H.I. Mar 12, 1893" duplex, Fine.
Estimate 2,000 - 3,000

Kalaupapa was the leper colony located on a peninsula isolated from the rest of the island by a sheer cliff. There are no known postmarks from the colony. Mail was most likely disinfected prior to dispatch from the colony and upon arrival into Honolulu. Similar item from the same correspondence was in the Honolulu Advertiser sale (lot 3541).

Lewers & Cooke. / Honolulu, H.I., printed two-line script corner card on 4¢ red (U3) used entire cancelled by purple "Lihue Kauai Jul 20, 1892" c.d.s. to Waimea, toning and slightly rough opening at top, also includes an unused U3 entire bearing the same corner card, Fine and rare pair. The used entire is the only recorded used example of this entire with the Lewers & Cooke corner card.

Nov 20, 1888" c.d.s. to Los angeles, Cal., reverse with purple "Lewers & Cooke" cachet handstamp and Los Angeles (11.29) receiver, fold and edgewear, also includes unused U1, U3 and U4 entires bearing the same corner card, Fine and rare. The used 5¢ entire bears what is believed to be the latest recorded usage of the Lewers & Cooke oval datestamp.
