There are only about a half dozen squared circle hammers known; this may be the only one in private hands.

Provenance: Carstairs
Though well known, this example is apparently not included in the census. It was purchased by Hennok in 1986 for more than £3,000 at the Cavendish Auction of the Dr. M. Carstairs collection. At the time it was the only known example. Included with the stamp is a 1959 letter from Alfred Whitehead to Dr. Carstairs, in which Whitehead expresses his desire to acquire the stamp, the only one known at the time, from Carstairs.

The second strike reads "(C)OLEMA(N)" on a 3¢ Small Queen, and is not included in the census; the latter, which has a light crease, is ex-Kemp. RF 220. Estimate 2,000 - 3,000
THE CARD IS THE EARLIEST OF THE TWO EXAMPLES IN THE CENSUS.
