1914 (8 July) parcel card to Eichwalde near Berlin, bearing on front and back 1900 80pf and 1906-13 10pf, 1m, and 5m greenish black and carmine with center fluorescing lilac "Himmel hell" pair (Michel 19, 26, 29A, 32Ab), cancelled by "Swakopmund/Deutsch-/Südwestafrika" c.d.s., franked at 11.90 mark for three parcels of a total weight of 6-6.5 kilograms, the parcels never reached Germany and remained in German South West Africa, Very Fine and outstanding.

1914 (20 July) envelope to New York, bearing 10pf red (Michel 26b) pair, cancelled by "Deutsche Seepost/Ost-Afrika/Linie/r" c.d.s. of the "Admiral", which left Swakopmund on 20 April, took refuge in Lourenço Marques in August and was confiscated by the Portuguese in March, 1916, Very Fine.

1914 (9 Sept.) piece, bearing 3pf brown (Michel 24), tied by complete strike of "Lüderitzbucht" c.d.s. with "14" year date only (in use only on 17 and 18 September), Very Fine and rare.

ONLY ONE COMPLETE POSTAL ITEM EXISTS WITH THIS CANCELLATION: A POSTAL MONEY ORDER IN THE PAULS COLLECTION.

On 13 September, the German police station in Ramansdrift on the Orange River was raided by Union troops. On the 14th, the British Steamer "Armada Castle" bombarded Swakopmund. On the 18th, British warships laid anchor in the harbor of Lüderitzbucht. The German local authority and most of the population fled the city by rail. Enemy troops landed on the 19th and quickly took over the post office and signal station. The post office officials left Lüderitzbucht on the 14th and returned 2 days later, but forgot to bring the date slugs for the cancellers from Aus. From the 17th to lunch time on the 18th the dates were inserted by hand or left out.

1914 "Swakopmunder Buchhandlung G.m.b.H., Zweigniederlassung Lüderitzbucht" corner card envelope to Keetmanshoop (21.9), bearing 10pf red (Michel 26), cancelled by "Lbucht" and cross in pen, Very Fine and rare emergency usage.

Towards lunch time on 18 September, part of the post office staff left with the postal devices on the last train to Aus. Between lunch time and 16.00hrs., a few postal officials, who were on horseback, stayed behind and processed the remaining few pieces of mail. These were cancelled in manuscript. The remaining officials then left Lüderitzbucht at 16.00hrs.

1915 (17 Jan.) official meterological report from Rössing to the Imperial German Government in Windhoek, showing "Usakos/Deutsch-/Südwestafrika" c.d.s., Very Fine and rare origin.

Swakopmund had been evacuated by the Germans on 25 September 1914, following which South African soldiers landed in Walfish Bay on 25 November.

1915 (19 Jan.) envelope from Küstner in Swakopmund to a member of the Coastal Protection Unit in Rössing, forwarded to Karibib (30.1) Okawayo, since Swakopmund had been evacuated the cover was actually mailed on the Swakopmund-Windhoek railway line and shows "Jakalswater/Deutsch-/Südwestafrika" c.d.s. (19.1.15, the "9" inserted by hand), which was utilised as a Field Post Office cancellation from 11 January 1914, Very Fine and unusual.

1914-15 Heinecke correspondence, comprising 27 envelopes (one franked and eleven endorsed "Feldpostbrief") and 11 telegrams (accompanying the envelopes from the period he was captured) from Ernst Heinecke, a member of a 150 strong mixed race unit, to his wife in Rehoboth or Windhoek, showing the unit's movements, commencing with 1914 (13 Aug.) envelope from Heinecke as a member of the National Police in Rehoboth (the mixed race unit was formed there on 8 August), then following the movements to Kraiport, Onanis, Jakalswater, Karibib (field hospital) and finally Fahlgras bz. Windhuk, all with sender's endorsements containing unit and location, then 1915 (15-16 July) envelopes (2, one South African printed telegram envelope with printed formular telegram showing "S.A. Field Telegraph and Postal Corps" c.d.s.) from the police jail in Korab following his being taken prisoner by the Union troops, 1915 (29 July-19 Sept.) censored envelopes (9, all with telegrams) from Aus to Windhoek showing use of different cancellers commencing with Keetmanshoop c.d.s., framed "Aus" date stamp in blue, "Aus/S.W. Africa" double-ring date stamp, and unframed "Prisoner of War/Free of Charge/Aus/Passed by Censor" handstamp in violet, and finally 2 P.O.W. covers to his wife in Windhoek marked unknown/unclaimed, Very Fine and unique documentation of one man's story from a postal history aspect.

1915 (17 May) "On Active Service" postcard from Walfish Bay to Pretoria, showing "South African/Aviation Corps." oval date stamp in violet, Very Fine and early example of military aviation.
Estimate 1,200 - 1,500

Formed on 28 January 1915, the South African Aviation Corps, consisted of aviators who had trained in England. They disembarked in South West Africa with six planes in April, 1915. A first flight took place at Walfish Bay on June 5.

The Germans had two planes and Willi Trück flew these to observe troop advancements along the railway line in the South. Sometimes, he also bombed the advancing troops.
