British Columbia & Vancouver Island 1860, 2½d dull red, perf 14 (2), pair uncancelled but applied over manuscript "Paid 10¢" with "Barnard's Cariboo Express. Paid" label alongside, on 1864 cover from San Francisco to Dereham, Canada West, U.S., postage paid with 10¢ green (68) tied by framed grid, postmarked mostly bold Nov. 2 San Francisco double circle, Dereham receiver (Dec 1) on reverse; stamps with creases, cover opened roughly at left and with edge tears, one affecting express label, Fine and rare usage. SG 2.

In June of 1864 the use of British Columbia stamps by the express companies was made compulsory. Re-rated in British Columbia at 3d, they paid the Colonial postage of 6d or 10¢. The express label showed that a $1.00 charge from the interior had been paid. The U.S. 10¢ paid the reduced rate (as of July 1, 1864) to Canada West.
