AN EARLY NEW JERSEY LETTER WITH INTERESTING CONTENT CONCERNING ENGLISH AFFAIRS WITH THE SPANISH IN FLORIDA AND GEORGIA.

The letter announces the death of the writer's brother, Walter, with discussion of the estate, etc., in addition to advice on sending letters, "put it in the ship's bag which they will find in the New York and New England coffee houses behind the Royal Exchange it will come safe to hand", though the letter ends with significant comment, "the Crown of Spain has a desire to take Georgia, and that they have ten thousand men at St. Augustine ready to attack Georgia. If so it is supposed here that we shall have bloody noses very soon".

Steele" free frank endorsement of the Comptroller's office, entered the mails with red manuscript "Trenton 3 Sep." postmark and "Free" rating, Very Fine, sent during the period the federal government had relocated to Trenton because of a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY EARLY LETTER FROM NEW YORK TO BARBADOS.

This letter is to merchant Roger Gordon, the same as lot 3 from the Siskin sale that was dated 9 May 1685 to Boston. This letter, just over a year later, places Roger Gordon in Barbados.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE "N:YORK" STRAIGHTLINE POSTMARK IN BLUISH GREEN.

The New York Constitutional Post under the authority of newly appointed postmaster Ebenezer Hazard, used a distinctive bluish-green ink with New York straightline handstamps. The distinctive ink color was apparently used to distinguish the markings from the competing Parliamentary post. The bluish-green ink is recorded from August 31, 1775 through July 15, 1776.
