1847, 5¢ red brown (1), two singles, first with ample margins to clear at bottom, cancelled by black grid, on white envelope to Rose Clapp in West Haven with red "Binghamton N.Y. Feb. 19" c.d.s., other has large margins to touching two sides, tied by bright red grid, matching Aug. 27th c.d.s. and addressed to Miss Clapp in Black Rock; each cover with tiny edge tear, Very Fine and scarce pair of covers making a most appealing exhibit page.

During the time span of this correspondence the more familiar Binghamton herringbone cancel was supplanted by a gridiron and the occasional pen cancel- this situation provided the basis for a number of clever fakes with the more valuable fancy herringbone added to cleaned or substituted stamps; the end result is that Binghamton covers with grid cancels have become quite scarce.

Oct. 1" c.d.s. with line underneath date, partly struck off cover's edge, original 1850 enclosure; envelope with barest hint of toning near top (not affecting stamp), One of only two 1847 covers with the Utica circular date stamp— all others bear the familiar double oval, Very Fine and rare.

It appears as though the postmark was deliberately struck off the envelope's edge, presumably to eliminate the integral rate found at the bottom of the device, probably a "10". The other cover known with this postmark also has the c.d.s. partly struck off the cover's edge in similar fashion.
