For a brief period in 1861 government stamped envelopes were briefly unavailable from the post office due to the changeover from the "star dies" to the Nesbitt issue. Wells Fargo found it necessary to print their red frank on plain envelopes and to affix 10¢ adhesives to pay the government postage.

Unfranked "paste-up" envelope, to Montreal showing "Wells, Fargo & Co./Victoria V.I./Express" oval handstamp in blue and "Union Pacific R.P.O./Mar 15" c.d.s., paste-up side is a U.S. 6¢ entire with a Canada Large Queen 6¢ brown (27) cancelled "35" in barred oval on unaddressed "paste-up" side with Wells Fargo frank, blue "For Great Britain (and Irela)nd" straightline handstamp and a 2nd strike of the blue Victoria Wells Fargo oval, as well as a "Montreal/Mr21 7?" c.d.s.; the two envelopes have been separated for display, there are a few cover tears and the stamp has a diagonal tear, but a very rare paste-up bearing Large Queen stamp.
