Lot 1885

Rusk Texas, Mar 10, 1861, Very Fine c.d.s. on cover to Crockett, Texas with 3¢ dull red (26) cancelled manuscript "3", cover reduced slightly at top and slightly repaired but an attractive and scarce early Confederate Texas usage. In the enclosed letter, dated Mar 7, the writer speaks of awaiting news of Lincoln's inauguration and oppines that "Lincoln will have but a small share of the U.S. under his control…I hope and trust it all may be settled without blood shed…I am utterly opposed to the Union as it was, but…am much in favour of a Union." 2005 P.F. Certificate.

Texas was admitted to the Confederacy on March 6, the day before this letter was written, a fact of which the writer was apparently unaware.

Addressed to Capt. George Little as the Confederate States Central Laboratory in Macon, Ga. This laboratory-factor complex was responsible for C.S.A. ordnance production and testing. A dispute as to the ownership of the land on which laboratory sat after the war, led to a Supreme Court decision (Titys v. United States) that recognized the existence of the Confederate states.

Chief of the Appointment Bureau, Dietz type I with Clements signature on 6¢ green entire (U14) to Raleigh, N.D., clear "Richmond Va. Sep. 28" c.d.s. and matching "Free"; cover with skillful repairs at edges and flap reattached, Very Fine appearance, very rare. Accompanying the cover is a note from a soldier in the 9th N.J. Vols. to DR. J.A. Petrie: "found by me in the Post Office at Raleigh N.C. April 17th 1865, immediately after evacuation of the city by the rebel General Johnston and its occupation by Gen. Sherman". The 6¢ green is unlisted with a type I imprint.

Foster, Georgia's Quartermaster General, postmarked Richmond, Sep 30, 1861, with "PAID/10" in circle; small repaired burn hole in address, Fine. Also included is an official handwritten copy, on Ordnance Office letterhead, of a letter from Maj. Josiah Gorgas, Chief of Ordnance, to John J. Thrasher, one of the founder's of Atlanta, telling Thrasher that Gorgas had authorized Gen. Foster to ratify a contract with Thrasher to provide "accoutrements" for the Confederate Army.

"Immortal 600" P.O.W. cover and letter, Cover cancelled Charleston, S.C., Oct. 31, 1864 with handstamped "10" endorsed "B G Brown Capt., Prisoner of War, Morris Island S.C." and "Per flag of truce, via Charleston"; letter is datelined "Officers Prison, Morris Island S.C., Sept 12th 1864", in it Capt. Brown writes to his parents in Mechums River, Va., telling of his rough trip form Ft. Delaware (leaving on Aug. 20 and arriving on Sept. 7) and of his hopes of being "exchanged when he arrived here, but I think the chance is bad". Letter has splits along folds reinforced with archival tape, cover is Very Fine.

Bezaliel G. Brown was captured at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. He died at home, at the age of 30, in July of 1865, two months after his release from F. Delaware.
