Baltimore Md. to Freiwaldau, Silesia; 5¢ red brown (1), large margins to clear, red "5" handstamp, on cover to Freiwaldau, Silesia, originally postmarked Dec. 2, 1850 from Baltimore with manuscript "Due 16" with balance to be paid in cash, endorsed "American Steamer" at top, due marking deleted along with "Paid" handstamp in red and endorsement, stamp placed at right, postmarked again on the 8th, manuscript "per Liverpool steamer" with last word deleted, "via Berlin" in corner, manuscript due markings (British "1/4", Prussian "46" S gr.), reverse with British transit and red "America per England" in box and straightline "Freywaldau" with Dec. 28 date, Fine and most unusual usage.

Nov 13" c.d.s., endorsed "via Boston Steamer" at lower left, carried on the Cunard ship Caledonia, bold black "1/-" shilling handstamp struck opposite pair, Very Fine usage.

Wilmington Del. to Liverpool, England; 5¢ red brown (1), horizontal pair, full margins to clear at top left, striking shade and fine impression, cancelled by bold green grid, matching "Wilmington De. Sep. 29" c.d.s. on 1847 folded letter to Liverpool England, endorsed "via Boston Steamer" at bottom left, perfectly applied "1/-" shilling handstamp at center, colorful contents which nicely mix the personal and business including discussing sea voyage where 10 passengers died, hunting for flying squirrels in Wales, Santa Ana in Mexico, converting a snuff mill to a paper mill, in addition to references to the Baard family, prominent in Delaware politics; manuscript "Ans" as usual with the Shipley correspondence, lettersheet with pre-print paperfold at top causing a light horizontal crease in the adhesives; Very Fine appearance, true Green cancels on the 1847 issue are of the utmost rarity.

Charleston S.C. to Devonport, England; 5¢ red brown (1, 1-A, 1 var), five singles, full to large margins except far right stamp (Dot in "S" var.) just in at top right, and left stamp touched on side, fourth stamp is position 80R1 Double transfer A, each tied by red grids on 1850 white envelope pre-paying the 24c Treaty Rate to Devonport, England, matching "Charleston S.C. Apr. 11" c.d.s., red "19" credit and Liverpool transit postmark, receiving datestamp on back; cover with small skillful restoration at corners, second stamp from left with small crease, a Very Fine and important usage.

New York N.Y. to Edinburgh, Scotland; 5¢ red brown, 10¢ black (1, 2, 2-A), three singles including two of 10¢ (see editorial note below), left copy is Double Transfer A (position. 1R1), margins to cutting, tied by red grids on large part of 1850 folded cover to Scotland paying the 24¢ British mail rate with 1¢ convenience overpayment, bold red "19 New York Jul. 31" exchange c.d.s., two different British Paid datestamps; side and top flaps missing, cleaned, position 1R with pressed-out vertical creases, Fine appearance and very rare.

Expertization: 1992 P.F. Certificate.

This cover is listed in the Alexander census as having one only one 10¢ stamp with the other missing. Yet the cover now has two 10¢ stamps with the P.F. Certificate stating "genuine usage … stamps have been removed, cleaned and reaffixed". Under high power magnification and ultra violet light, the "missing" 10c stamp shows every sign of belonging to the cover: the shade is right, the color and shape of the grid cancel are a perfect match and the "tie" is exact. One can certainly draw the conclusion that either the stamp was loose (perhaps inside the envelope); or someone had the missing stamp in their stock or collection and reunited the stamp with its cover.

One additional note of interest: there is a reference in the enclosed letter to the death of Zachary Taylor.

Oct. 3" c.d.s. on 1850 folded letter to Amsterdam, Holland, endorsed "Steamer from N.York to L'pool", manuscript "1/4" British debit and "110" Dutch cents which includes an additional 10¢ for Belgium routing, reverse with red British transit, oval "England/Over Ostende" and Amsterdam receiving postmark, all clear strikes, Very Fine and rare.

Jun. 19" c.d.s. and faint large "5" in a different red, clear black "1/-" shilling handstamp, reverse with Liverpool receiving postmark; Very Fine and rare.

Montreal, Canada to San Francisco Cal.; 5¢ red brown (1), two horizontal pairs originally forming a block of four, margins to cutting, tied together by bold single pen stroke in blue, on buff envelope from Canada to California, addressed to a "Mr. William Phillips of Canada. Post Office San Francisco California", red slanting "Paid" handstamp and matching Montreal Aug 14 1850 postmark, manuscript "4½" due rating, manuscript "p. paid" and "to be kept till called for" written by sender; cover extensively cleaned and repaired, penciled numbers at left, probably non-postal, strengthened, the left stamps with staining removed, their color affected, Very Good appearance.

THE LARGEST RECORDED FRANKING OF THE 1847 5¢ FROM CANADA.

Expertization: 2002 Sismondo Certificate and photocopy of 1988 "no opinion" P.F. Certificate.

The rate from Montreal to the U.S. border was 4½d. The U.S. transcontinental rate was 40¢ with these two 5¢ pairs representing a 20¢ short payment of that rate.

Montreal, Canada to New York N.Y.; 10¢ black (2), single with three wide margins, close to cutting frameline at bottom, crisp impression, tied to 1851 Kennedy correspondence folded letter datelined "Montreal Feby 3d 1851," red "Montral L.C./FE 3 1851" origin c.d.s., additional red "PAID" handstamp and manuscript "4½ (d)" due rating, stamp tied by red "10" in circle applied upon arrival in New York; light file fold affects stamp, a Fine usage showing the 4d currency "to the lines" rate paid in cash and the U.S. over 300 miles rate paid by the 10¢ stamp, the Alexander census of U.S. 1847 issue covers list only twenty usages from Montreal to the U.S. being franked with 10¢ 1847 stamp.

Liverpool, England to New York N.Y. via Boston Forwarder; 5¢ red brown (1), ample margins to touching, fine late impression, tied by grid on May 24, 1851 folded letter from Liverpool to New York, clear four-line handstamp in red: "Forwarded By/ Wm. Bailey Lang/ Commission Merchant/ Boston" struck at lower left, red "Paid" handstamp and matching "Boston 5cts 5 Jun" c.d.s.; stamp with tiny corner crease at bottom left, Fine, a very rare forwarder's handstamp with the 1847 Issue.

Bailey Lang is an unrecorded forwarder, and this marking is most likely unique, and almost certainly so on the 1847 issue.

Panama to New York N.Y.; 10¢ black (2), horizontal strip of three, positions 55-57L, 57L with the "hairlip" variety, mostly large margins, just in at top left and bottom right, each stamp with matching pen cancel paying the 30¢ rate from Panama on folded cover to New York, manuscript docketing: "Apr. 8, answd 11th. aft sent to T. Hyde & Co pr Georgia"; small corner crease and scissor cut in right stamp; a Very Fine and rare usage.
