One pane of 50 was discovered by H.E. Harris in a shipment of new issues from the Canal Zone philatelic agency. When the error was announced U.S. Postmaster General J. Edward Day made plans to intentionally reproduce millions of similar errors, just as he had done earlier when the Dag Hammarskjold inverted background error was discovered. In a landmark case Harris successfully sued to prevent the post office from ever reproducing errors in order to destroy collector value. All known examples are from this pane, which Harris broke up and sold beginning in 1969. The other three panes from the original sheet of 200 were discovered by Canal Zone postal inspectors; two were laminated and presented to the National Postal Museum, and the third was destroyed.

Canal Zone 1906, 2¢ and 8¢ type B Bliss precancels (23, 25 var.), overprinted diagonally "Postage Due". O.g. Fresh and Very Fine.
Estimate 400 - 600

Provenance: Leeds

Various "Postage Due" handstamps were originally supplied to C.Z. postmasters for marking mail. Inevitably some ended up being used as cancellers, but only Gerald D. Bliss, then postmaster at San Miguel, conceived of the idea of using the devices to precancel his stock. The "Bliss precancels" exist in two types, the first (type A) reading "POSTAGE DUE" in capital letters, the second (type B) reading "Postage Due" with capital initials only. By the time Bliss began to precancel some of his stock for postage due use the handstamps had become quite worn. Examples are often very difficult to read.

The stamps straight edge at right proves that it is not from one of the same positions that have the missing "E" variety. This variety was probably caused by some foreign matter coming between the type and the stamp during the overprinting. This is the only recorded example.
