Lot 349
o
1851, 3¢ orange brown, mis-identified position (10), position 32L2E, fresh and Fine. A scarce position simply because 3¢ collectors have always used the Chase photographs as their guide, hence searching for the incorrect characteristics for a true 32L.
Estimate 400 - 500

Richard Celler, in studying the Chase photographs, discovered that the stamp identified by Chase as position 32L on his reconstruction of plate 2 Early, was in reality a duplicate of his position 55L. While the characteristics of the two positions are similar, there are three key differences, an explanatory diagram of which is included with the lot.
