Early American paper money, two notes: 1.) Continental Currency, Act of Sept 26, 1778, $50, signed R. Cather & J. Dundas; 2.) Massachusetts, Act of May 5, 1780, $3, signed R. Cranch, Lam. Baldwin & Thos. Walley, both uncancelled and Fine, the latter accompanied by an 1889 2-page tongue-in-cheek letter signed by U.S. Treasurer James W. Hyatt to N.Y. Senator Charles S. Baker in which Hyatt informs Baker that he will have to inform his constituent that the $3 note, with its 109 years of interest, is not and "was never redeemable by the United States". An interesting piece of historical collateral for a currency collector.

1847 (1875 Reproductions), 5¢-10¢ complete (3-4), 5¢ with huge margins and a tiny thin speck, 10¢ large margins and faint pressed creases, Very Fine-Extremely Fine appearance; accompanied by a choice mint banknote from "The State Bank at New Brunswick" (N.J.) printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson featuring the Washington and Franklin portraits that were the basis of the two stamps. Also includes an 1851 folded letter from New York to Albany with an engraved illustrated R., W., H. & E. letterhead.

Novermber 17th" (manuscript postmark) to Johnsonville, Ohio, Very Fine.

AN EXTRAORDINARY THREE-COLOR CONFEDERATE USAGE OF U.S. STAMPS ON OVERSEAS CORRESPONDENCE.

Louisiana was admitted to the Confederacy on February 4. U.S. stamps remained in use throughout the south until May 31 when their use was prohibited.
The accompanying P.F. Certificate mistakenly notes the month of the New Orleans cancel as March instead of February.

S.H. Pilsbury, Prisoner of War", examiner's signature "Ex, Lieu Williams, 32 Ga" on reverse, "Old Point Comfort Va Dec 16" c.d.s., Very Fine, an unusual usage with the Confederate postage cancelled by the Union due handstamp.

Camp Sorghum was established in early October 1864 and due to a lack of any real security, prisoners weremoved in late December to Camp Asylum in Columbia. The examiner was a guard at Camp Sorghum from November to December 1864. The letter entered the Union mails at Point Comfort with the Confederate postage uncancelled, thereby using the Union due handstamp to do so.

The Polynesian, 1840-41, Vol. 1, No 1-52, the first 52 issues of a weekly tabloid size newspaper published in Honolulu by one James Jackson Jarves, each issue contains four pages of news, poetry, ship sailings & arrivals and advertising. Additionally, tipped into issue No. 12 is an etching of "The appearance of the three hills formed by the late eruption, on the coast of Nanawale…July 9th, 1840". Bound between heavy cardboard with leather spine and hinges; binding split with front cover loose and there is some light toning, as would be expected, but altogether in remarkably good condition for a 165-year old newspaper. A rare and fascinating document for anyone with an interest in Hawaiian history.
