1857, "5¢" manuscript surcharge on 13¢ dark red, "5¢" deleted by pen strokes (7 var.), clear margins to in a bit at right, San Francisco 1858 c.d.s., thinned, sealed tear, small abrasion at bottom left, a quite presentable example of this rare provisional.

The "5¢" provisional was used only until August 1857. It is known from the Hawaiian Post Office records that remainders of the surcharged stamp were later used as 12 ct. provisional "w the 5 crossed (out)". This example may be unique.
