THE UNIQUE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED USAGE OF THE 5¢ JAMESTOWN.

Expertization: 2000 P.F. Certificate.

There are no recorded first day covers bearing the 5¢ Jamestown because it was not issued until after the 1¢ and 2¢ values. The first day for the 1¢ and 2¢ values is April 26, and the Jamestown issue first day covers are the rarest of all Commemorative FDcs. According to the article by Henry Scheuer in First Days, May-June 1976, "1907 Jamestown Commemorative Series - Part I", he cites a government publication that lists the first printing of the 5¢ value on April 27, 1907 and first day sale as May 8, 1907. It is therefore possible that this is in fact the only recorded first day cover of the 5¢ Jamestown.

This cover has never been offered on the public market. It was found in 2000 by Arnold Selengut while looking for a non-first day cover. The previous earliest reported usage of the 5¢ Jamestown was May 9, 1907 (one reported) and May 10, of which four covers are reported used this day (one of these sold for $17,600 in a 1997 James T. McCusker auction).
