1847, 5¢ red brown (1), four margins, tied by bold squared grid in red on 1847 folded letter to Washington D.C., matching strong strike of "New-York Jul 26" c.d.s., file fold aged, Fine, a scarce first month usage.

There are less than 30 recorded July usages of the 5¢ 1847 issue from New York City. Over the last 15-20 years there have only been a handful offered at auction.

1847, 10¢ black (2), four large margins with an excellent impression, tied by red square grid on 1847 folded cover to Charleston S.C., matching "New York 10cts 10 Jul" c.d.s.; stamp with light even toning, a Very Fine usage.

THE THIRD EARLIEST USAGE OF THE 10¢ 1847 ISSUE.

Expertization: 2000 P.F. Certificate.

The two earlier documented examples are the famous July 2nd cover and a July 9th usage from New York to Galena Ill.

THE LAST DAY OF POSTAL VALIDITY FOR THE 1847 ISSUE PRIOR TO DEMONETIZATION ON JULY 1, 1851.

Provenance: Fisher

The 5-cent and 10-cent stamps of the 1847 issue were declared invalid by the Act of March 3, 1851 that reduced the normal letter rate from five cents to three cents.
