1d dull orange, 2d pale blue, and 6d brown (SG 8, 9, 13), the 1d and 2d with large margins, the 6d in at bottom, tied by "18" on 1860 (20 May) folded letter sheet from Otago to Irvine Ayr, Scotland (6.8) "via Marseilles", redirected to Prestwick with Great Britain 1d red (not the original franking) applied to pay redirection, with "Irvine" c.d.s., the cover slightly refolded, Very Fine forwarded cover at the 9d via Marseilles rate. 1d dull orange with 1862 Davies 3d brown-lilac and 6d brown (SG 8, 40, 42), the 1d with large to huge margins, the other two touched or in at top and bottom, tied by "11" on 1863 (7 Sept.) envelope from Napier to Scarborough, Yorkshire (16.11) "via Marseilles", Very Fine mixed issue cover with late use of the Richardson 1d to make up the new via Marseilles rate of 10d per ½ ounce. THE EARLIEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 10 PENCE RATE VIA MARSEILLES FOR UP TO ¼ OUNCE WHICH CAME INTO EFFECT AS PER THE POSTAL NOTICE OF 1 SEPTEMBER 1863.

Expertization: 2006 Odenweller Certificate.

This unusual late usage of the Richardson 1d was caused by the increase of the postal rate from 9d (standard franking of 3d + 6d) to 10d.

2d deep ultramarine on thick paper (SG 8a), strip of three, distinctive shade and brilliant impression indicative of the first printings, large margins to cut in at foot, cancelled "12" on 1858 (24 July) envelope from Petre to Lynn, Norfolk (1.12) via Wellington (31.7) and London (1.12), showing unframed "Ship Letter" handstamp in red adjacent, Fine and exceptionally rare usage on cover.
