French "Marion" Patent Envelope, envelope cancelled by "Chateauroux, 8 Mars 49" double-circle datestamp to Paris, France, manuscript rating, Paris (3.8) arrival backstamp on part of original letter within the arrival window, additional strike adjacent; envelope flaws, Fine and scarce precursor to the Leed's envelopes.

The envelope invented by Mr. Marion, a Paris Stationer, included two large holes - one on the front and one on the reverse so that the departure and arrival postmarks would be preserved on the enclosed letter. This invention was approved by the French Minister of Finance in March 1846.

The official advertisement by the New York post office of the new 1861 issue was published on September 16, 1861. The advertisement stipulated an exchange period for stamps of the old design of six days from the date of the notice, after which stamps of the old issue would no longer be accepted as payment of postage by the New York post office. The final day of legal usage would have been September 21, but the deadline was extended with additional advertisements due to the long lines of people exchanging old stamps.
