1881 from Corinto to Lime Rock, R.I. via New York, cover bearing 1869-71 5c. black (5) on thin white paper and 1879 25c. green (12), roulette 8½ tied by well struck "9 C" framed handstamps of Corinto, "New York Mar 12 81" duplex with "Due 5 Cents" for the steamship rate; some cover flaws including staining and opened on two sides, a Fine and rare usage.

Nicaragua was not a member of the UPU until May 1, 1882. As such, incoming mail would be required to pay the United States postage as a ship or steamship letter depending on the conveyance.

1882 to London, England via Panama, cover bearing 1869-71 5c. black (5) on thin white paper and 1879 25c. green (12), roulette 8½ tied by cork cancellation, sent via British Post Office with "Panama JA 5" transit overstruck with "London JA 28 82" arrival c.d.s., black "1s/-" circled due handstamp for external rate since Nicaragua was not a UPU member until May 1, 1882; small repaired cover tear (not mentioned on Certificate), still a Very Fine and scarce usage.

"Legation of Nicaragua, Near the United States of America", imprint on legal-size cover addressed to "His Excellency General Wm. Walker, President of Nicaragua, Granada", partial flap, fresh and Very Fine.

William Walker (1824-1860) was a filibuster, adventurer, and soldier of fortune who attempted to conquer several Latin American countries in the mid-19th century. He held the presidency of the Republic of Nicaragua from 1856 to 1857 and was executed by the government of Honduras on September 12, 1860.

Four overprinted and one United Nations overprinted Nicaragua airmails tied Managua 5.15.30, U.S. $1.30 Zeppelin (C14) tied by Lakehurst 5.27.30 duplex, reverse with additional Nicaragua 1c., 2c. and 4c. stamps, red German and purple U.S. Zeppelin cachets.
