A UNIQUE EASTBOUND USAGE TO UTAH TERRITORY AT THE $3.00 EXPRESS RATE, APPEARING AT AUCTION FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.

Initially, a short distance rate between San Fransisco and Salt Lake City, Utah Territory was advertised at $3 per half ounce or less. This newly discovered example is the only recorded usage showing this reduced rate, although the Frajola, Kramer and Walske book notes that this special rate was withdrawn according to an advertisement dated April 16, 1860 which listed the $5 rate for any distance.

The "Paid Central Overland Pony Express Company" frank was introduced at the commencement of operations. There is only one other example recorded during the first rate period, imprinted on a 10¢ envelope used on the first trip (Census #E2). The lot is accompanied by two other Wells Fargo, and an illustrated Daily Bee advertising, usages to Mrs. Winters.
