Confederacy, Richmond Va./Jan. 23 1862, c.d.s. and matching "Paid/5 Cts." two-line handstamp on envelope addressed to General Joseph R. Anderson, "C.S. Army," Wilmington, N.C., "ch. Box 268, S.E.A." notation (box charge initialed by his wife), Fine.

Joseph R. Anderson served the Confederate war effort as President of the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond and an important supplier of these materials up to the evacuation. He served briefly in the field as a Brigadier General with a command in the District of Cape Fear and then leading the 3rd North Carolina Brigade on the Peninsula. After being wounded at Frasier's Farm, he resigned his commission in July, 1862.

Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ green (1), deep color, faults of defects, tied by "Jackson (Miss.)/May 14 (1862)" c.d.s. on envelope to General Braxton Bragg at Corinth, Miss., "Politeness of Col. Cage," believed to be in the hand of Bragg's wife, opening tears at upper left.

Braxton Bragg was made a full general in the regular army just prior to the sending of this letter. By the end of May, General Beauregard evacuated Corinth where Beauregard had retreated after the fall of Shiloh. Bragg relieved Beauregard of his command of the Army of Tennessee on June 27.

The June 25 date in the c.d.s. seems to make this an 1862 usage on the eve of the Seven Days Battles. General Anderson was wounded at Frasier's Farm on June 30, 1862 and resigned his commission shortly thereafter.

Expertization: signed Brian Green.

George H. Steuart was appointed Brigadier General on March 6, 1862. Wounded at Cross Keys, Steuart commanded an infantry brigade at Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania. He was captured at the "Mule Shoe".
