Lot 1337

1923, 2¢ Harding, flat plate, Imperf Error (610b), top margin plate no 14870 block of 15, original gum, never hinged, natural gum crease, Bureau blue crayon marks at bottom, Very Fine.
Scott $25,000

A MAGNIFICENT 20TH CENTURY RARITY, ONE OF ONLY THREE KNOWN IMPERFORATE PLATE BLOCKS FROM PLATE 14870, A PLATE ONLY USED FOR THE PERF. 11 FLAT PLATE STAMPS.

A single imperforate pane of 100 from plate 14870 was discovered in a post office pad of 100 panes of normal perforated stamps. Despite the fact that the pane had been "blue-penciled" for destruction at the Bureau, it had somehow been distributed with the normal panes. A month and a half later, when the 2¢ black Harding was officially issued imperforate (Scott #611), it was printed from a different set of plates, thereby allowing only the imperforates with plate number 14870 attached to be positively identified as coming from the error sheet. All others became indistinguishable from the regularly issued imperforates.

Lot 1341

1979, 15¢ John Paul Jones, perf 12 (1789B), upper left plate block of 10, virtually perfectly centered and post office fresh with pristine, never hinged original gum, Extremely Fine.
Scott $40,000

A CHOICE PLATE BLOCK OF THIS IMPORTANT PERFORATION VARIETY.

Expertization: 1990 PF Certificate.

Only four panes of 50 have been reported and we are aware of one APS-certified plate number single, leaving only three intact plate blocks possible.

The 15¢ John Paul Jones commemorative was printed by J.W. Fergusson & Sons and was to have been perforated 12 x 12 by the American Bank Note Company. However, after just a single day of perforating the horizontal pins broke and were replaced by perf 11 pins, creating the common perf 11 x 12 variety. Later the vertical perf. 12 pins were also replaced by perf 11 pins, resulting in the perf 11 x 11 variety.
