New York Ocean Mail, two 1849 folded letters to San Francisco, Aug. 27 and Oct. 16, each with red 27 mm c.d.s. and black "40" in circle; earlier written from West Farms, with red "Paid" in arc, both with interesting contents, the Oct. letter discusses a gold shipment that went astray: "It ought to be here but we are all in the dark about where it is or where it could be—and you are so careless in your letter as not to give us any of the particulars—you only say by Express, which is very vague & don't mean anything…"; F-VF pair.
