Danish West Indies, 1861 (Dec. 9) St. Thomas to New York via Philadelphia, blue datelined folded letter endorsed "per Schn Normen" and bearing crisp strike of "U.S. Ship 3 cts." handstamp used by Philadelphia on mail arriving by U.S. ship during the Civil War, Very Fine and unusual use, this marking is normally found on Soldier's mail.

ONE OF ONLY APPROXIMATELY 15 RECORDED USAGES ON THIS ROUTE, THIS BEING ONE OF TWO WITH A RIO-DE-JANEIRO ARRIVAL DATESTAMP.

Letter was carried by Spanish packet from Matanzas, Cuba to St. Thomas with U.S. stamp affixed to prepay U.S. postage from St. Thomas to Rio via the United-States-Brazil Steamship Line "Merrimac". The letter transitted the Brazil Post Office, with 4d British stamp prepaying postage by the Pacific Steam Navigation Line "Magellan" to Argentina.
