The Christian X issue was available in the Islands for only three months (January-March 1917) before sale of Danish West Indies to the United States. A total of only 1000 stamps was available for sale and commercial usages are quite scarce.

Danish West Indies, 1917, 10b Washington Essay, photo mounted on card with pencil and watercolor frame surrounding, endorsed "Designed, M. Jumper", Very Fine.

One consideration was to replace the stamps of the Danish West Indies, in use since 1855, with a new and separate set of issues as for the Canal Zone and Philippines. This essay was designed by D.W. Jumper.
