EARLIEST RECORDED MONEY LETTER WITH A 3D CANADIAN ADHESIVE STAMP.

Expertization: 2011 Greene Foundation Certificate.

Money letters needed to be accounted for by being entered on the Way Bills accompanying the mails. The sender did not get a receipt but the receiver had to provide one to the postmaster or carrier on delivery. They were double rated and the fee for money letter service had to be paid in cash. This arrangement lasted from 1841 until the introduction of registry service in April 1855.

The Too Late marking indicates that the letter was posted after the outgoing mails were closed.

A CHOICE 6D RAILROAD USAGE.

Expertization: 1957 R.P.S. Certificate.

Provenance: Geldert, Wilkinson

The St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad rail line began operation in July 1853 between Montreal and Portland, Maine, to take advantage of winter sailings from that port for mail to the UK. The railway was known as the Atlantic & St. Lawrence Railroad when operating on U.S. soil.

Louis-Joseph Papineau (1786-1871) born in Montreal, Quebec, was a politician, lawyer, and the landlord of the seigneurie de la Petite-Nation. Papineau was elected Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada on January 21, 1815. The same year, he replaced Pierre-Stanislas Bédard as leader of the Parti Canadien. Under his leadership, the party worked for the reform of Lower Canada's political institutions and strongly opposed the abuses of the appointed Legislative Council. He was the leader of the reformist Patriote movement before the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837-1838. This is the same addressee as offered in lot 263.
