Canada, 1851, Beaver, 3d red, laid paper (Unitrade 1), full to large margins, used with U.S. 1¢ type IV (9) two singles, left with large to huge margins (sheet margin at bottom) except clear at top, other margins to cutting and 3¢ type II (11A), margins to cut in, tied together by circa 1854 "New-York Feb 18" c.d.s. on a small piece; left 1¢ with small scissors cut, 3d with tear, otherwise Fine. a unique usage showing an unauthorized but tolerated mixed franking prepaying the 10¢ rate, and the only relatively affordable example of a 3d laid paper used with U.S. postage. Scott 1.

After July 1, 1851, the combination use of a 3p Beaver and U.S. stamps was against regulations but occasionally tolerated. This is believed to be the only example of a Beaver stamp used with the 1¢ 1851.

Canada, 1851, Prince Albert, 6d slate violet, laid paper (Unitrade 2), three large margins, bottom just in, light corner crease, tied by criss-cross pen strokes on 1853 cover to Perth, Canada West, "Ledyard, CT, Oct. 24" origin c.d.s., Cape Vincent red fancy "U. States" with shield exchange marking and manuscript "10" due rating, black "6d" circled due handstamp indicating non-acceptance of Canadian postage, reverse with transits and "Perth, OC 28 1853" arrival c.d.s., with transit & receiving backstamps; cover with light wrinkling slightly toned at right; a Fine and rare attempted use of Canadian postage from the United States. Scott 2.

Usage of Canadian stamps from abroad was officially prohibited. In this case, the regulation was enforced and the Canadian stamp was not accepted as pre-payment of the 1/2 ounce letter rate.

Canada, 1853, Beaver, 3d brown red (Unitrade 4a), horizontal pair, rich color, huge margins to barely in at left showing portion of adjoining stamp at bottom left, tied by Saratoga Springs, NY, Jul. 6 (1857) c.d.s., on cover to Montreal with backstamp, cover slightly reduced at left, Very Fine. Scott 4a.
