Via Nicaragua, Stmr. Sierra Nevada, Advance of the Mails, blue oval handstamp on cover to Oakdale, Pa., bearing 3¢ dull red (11A), horizontal pair, tied by "New York 'Ship' Oct 9" c.d.s., Very Fine, a rare Via Nicaragua usage on the Vanderbilt's Independent Line steamer Sierra Nevada.

Letter departed San Francisco Cal. on September 16, 1854 and arrived at San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua September 29. Then carried by Vanderbilt Independent Line "Northern Light" that departed October 1 and arrived at New York on October 8, 1854.
