This cover was correctly prepaid for the 6¢ direct mail rate to Belgium (effective July 1, 1873 to June 30, 1875). The exchange office was apparently confused and originally marked it "Insufficently Prepaid" for the 8¢ closed mail rate via England, but realized their error and crossed it out in blue crayon.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED NYFM COVERS TO NEW ZEALAND, THIS TO A GOLDRUSH TOWN.

Beginning in 1864 Hokitika prospered as a goldrush town on the west coast of New Zealand. By late 1866 it was one of the country's most populous centres, located close to the mouth of the Hokitika River. This cover can be effectively dated to 1871-72 as known period of use for ST-5P1 is May 4, 1870 to April 14, 1872.

THE EARLIEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS INTRICATE 1873 NYFM CANCEL DESIGN.

The year of 1873 saw the introduction of the first cancel designs in the N.Y. foreign mail department that we term "intricate". Only 5 different intricate designs were made during this landmark year and are considered some of the most desirable. Period of use for the ST-MP3 are December 18, 1873 to May 15, 1875. This cancel was also used in red on supplementary mail.

This cover was not recorded by Weiss. Weiss shows an Aug. 5, 1874 use as the earliest, but this date is a print error and is actually Aug. 15. The earliest date of use as a result is August 15, which matches the cover offered here.

Negative Star within Radial (Weiss ST-MP5), two choice strikes tie 2¢ brown (157), two singles, and 3¢ green (158) horizontal pair, on 1873 cover to England, red "New York Dec. 10" exchange c.d.s., Hounslow (12.22.73) arrival backstamp; stamps with few tiny tears, a Very Fine use.

The 10¢ postage apparently overpays the 6¢ treaty rate to England, apparent confusion by the sender. The cover was carried by Cunard Line "Algeria" that departed New York on December 10, 1873 and arrived at Queenstown on December 20.
