A FINE MIXED COUNTRY FRANKING AND ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS TR-C UNLISTED NYFM.

This cancel is recorded used from April 26 to June 11, 1870. It was reported by Dan Richards in his article "NYFM Update, Part 1" in the U.S. Cancellation Club NEWS May 2011 issue on pages 98-99.

The sender apparently was trying to prepay the 10¢ French direct letter rate via French vessel to French port with the 60 centimes paying the inland fee. This special rate was established by a December 22, 1869 decree that remained in effect until July 1, 1871. Unfortunately, the sender did not prepay the correct 10¢ postage and the NYFM cleak sent the underpaid cover by the 4¢ British open mail rate via England to France. France apparently accepted the French 60c. in postage as full prepayment of the inland charges as the red "P.D." framed handstamp was struck.
