Lincoln "Rail Splitter" Campaign Token, 1860, copper, 28 mm, DeWitt/Sullivan AL 1860-41, only minor wear with attractive red toning and no sign of vertigris, a Very Fine example of this classic token.

According to
The Rail Splitter - A Journal for the Lincoln Collector, this token was part of a marketing campaign to shape Lincoln's image as the ideal American. "Rail Splitter" refers to an early period in Lincoln's life when he worked on the frontier, clearing land and building a homestead. In 1860 Lincoln campaigned as the "'Rail Splitter of the West,'" a slogan and image that propelled him to the White House.

Lincoln Campaign Speech, eight-page booklet, 5½" x 8½", containing the full text of a speech delivered February 27, 1860 at the Cooper Institute in New York City, sub-titled "The Republican Party Vindicated—The Demands of The South Explained"; in the speech Lincoln urges that slave states remain so but that no more states or territories should be allowed slavery and that the Union and the Constitution should prevail over states' rights; staples missing and top and right edges trimmed slightly, the latter just into the text, otherwise Fine and rare.

This speech first brought Lincoln to the attention of the Eastern politicians and ultimately led to his presidential nomination by the Republican Party.

Vermont's 1860 Republican Lincoln-Hamlin Ticket, 2.75" x 3" ticket reads "Republican Ticket. For President, Abraham Lincoln. For Vice-President, Hannibal Hamlin." along with a list of Presidential Electors: William Henry, Henry G. Root, Joseph Warner, Edward A. Cahoon, DeWitt C. Clarke; Very Fine and rare.

There is no location listed on this ticket, but Henry G. Root was identified in Aldrich's "History of Bennington County, Vermont" (1889) as being an 1860 Presidential Elector from Vermont who "had the honor of casting a vote for Abraham Lincoln in the electoral college".

Lincoln "Rail Splitter" Campaign Lettersheet and Envelope, three-page letter on illustrated Baker lettersheet datelined West Pitsfield [sic] (Mass.), Oct 21 (c. 1861] and unused Magee envelope with similar illustration; chatty family letter doesn't mention Lincoln (though it does mention the Prince of Wales passing through town), but a note added to blank fourth page by a friend of the sender ends with "I dont know whether this sheet of paper represents Maria's [sender] politics or not — but I hope before four years are passed all will like old Abhram [sic] better than now."
