Lot 339
o
1911, 3¢ deep violet, the "Orangeburg" coil (389), unusually well centered with characteristic deep violet color and the customary wavy line machine cancellation; light corner creases at top, neither of which are visible on the front; choice Very Fine appearance.
Scott $10,500

Expertization: 1980 & 2008 PF Certificates.

Provenance: Lyons, "Ganymede"

This 3¢ coil was produced specifically to be used by the Bell Pharmaceutical Company of Orangeburg, N.Y. to mail samples to doctors across the county. Three cents paid triple the 4th class mail rate, which indicates that the samples were quite bulky. In addition, the volume of the mass mailing necessitated that the covers be put through the first class cancelling machine rather than being hand cancelled. These two circumstances resulted in most of the surviving examples, and virtually all of the known covers, being affected by wrinkles and creases— or worse.
