Lot 112

1856, 5¢ red brown, relief C-D (12), irregular block of three, top stamp relief C, bottom pair relief D. Full to huge margins including portions of adjoining stamps at top right and right side to just nipping top projection on bottom left stamp, rich color, part original gum. Horizontal and vertical creases fully between stamps, negligible tone spots mostly on reverse, of little or no consequence on a piece of this rarity and importance. Generally Very Fine. Illustrated in Frajola and Mayer, p. 16, fig. 3-8.
Scott $65,000

A RARE AND IMPORTANT 5¢ 1856 MULTIPLE.

Expertization: 2005 P.F. Certificate.

It is estimated that fewer than 50 unused examples of the 5¢ imperforate have survived. Of these, very few have any portion of original gum. This is quite likely the only multiple of three bearing original gum extant.

Realized $45,000
