Lot 1375

1912, 2¢ Washington essay (406-E1), engraved design and vignette printed in black on thin white card, mounted on thick gray matte board after which the artist painted in the value, "2 CENTS 2" at the bottom, manuscript inscribed "Approved: July 17, 1911/P.M. Gen." and signed by P.M.G. Frank H. Hitchcock. A Very Fine and unique essay.
Estimate 4,000 - 5,000

The design change was necessary because of the U.P.U. regulation requiring its members to express stamp denominations in numerals.

Scott's listing describes this as a "reworked partial photo" but the main design was clearly produced by recess printing.
