Confederacy, 1862, 5¢ light blue, De La Rue printing (6), vertical pair, large margins, tied by "Pittsylvania C.H. Va. Sep. 11" c.d.s. on cover to George Wise "Care of Gen. H.A. Wise" Richmond, 1862 docketing, Extremely Fine, accompanied by CDV of the latter (Appleton & Co. imprint A.A. Turner, photographer - on back). A former governor of Virginia with no military training, Wise was appointed a Brigadier General in 1861; he served under Lee in the Western Virginia campaign and fought with distinction at Petersburg and Sayler's Creek. His brother-in-law was Union General George Meade.
