Joseph R. Anderson served the Confederate war effort as President of the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond and an important supplier of these materials up to the evacuation. He served briefly in the field as a Brigadier General with a command in the District of Cape Fear and then leading the 3rd North Carolina Brigade on the Peninsula. After being wounded at Frasier's Farm, he resigned his commission in July, 1862.
