What (now Illinois) was part of the original Northwest Territory until 1800, then part of Indiana Territory until 1809, and finally as Illinois Territory until statehood on December 2, 1818. One of twenty-eight territorial post offices, the often flooded Shawneetown served as a land office and shipping point.
