Lot 1217
1893, 4¢ Columbian, blue color error (233a), bright and fresh with rich color and barely hinged original gum, F.-V.F. and most attractive. Scott $19,000
A REMARKABLY FRESH, TRULY HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF THIS POPULAR ERROR.
Expertization: 1992 PF Certificate.
The 4¢ Columbian color error was the result of mistakenly using ink intended for the 1¢ value to print a run of 4¢ sheets. It is known that at least two panes reached collectors, as there are two slightly different shades known. In addition, the few used examples known apparently came from another pane(s).
