Pinkney [daughter of] "Fleet Surgeon N[inian] Pinkney, U.S.N., Hospital Pinkney, Memphis, Tenn", redirected to the "U.S. Hospital Ship Red Rover"; 3¢ rose tied by blue target with matching Baltimore c.d.s., May 2, 1864; opening tears at left, Fine.

The USS "Red Rover" was built in 1859, then served as the CSS "Red Rover" from 1861 until April 7, 1862 when she was captured, repaired and put into service as a U.S. hospital ship. Her medical staff included nurses from the Catholic Sisters of the Holy Cross, the first female nurses to serve aboard a Navy ship.
