1979, 15¢ John Paul Jones, perf 12 (1789B), upper left plate block of 10, virtually perfectly centered and post office fresh with pristine, never hinged original gum, Extremely Fine. Scott $40,000
A CHOICE PLATE BLOCK OF THIS IMPORTANT PERFORATION VARIETY.
Expertization: 1990 PF Certificate.
Only four panes of 50 have been reported and we are aware of one APS-certified plate number single, leaving only three intact plate blocks possible.
The 15¢ John Paul Jones commemorative was printed by J.W. Fergusson & Sons and was to have been perforated 12 x 12 by the American Bank Note Company. However, after just a single day of perforating the horizontal pins broke and were replaced by perf 11 pins, creating the common perf 11 x 12 variety. Later the vertical perf. 12 pins were also replaced by perf 11 pins, resulting in the perf 11 x 11 variety.
