Liberia 1846 stampless folded letter, datelined Monrovia, March 22nd, from James Eden, an early American missionary to Liberia, to a Walter Lourie in New York introducing one Mr. Semans who could give Lourie "all the information you need in relation to Africa". The letter was hand-carried to New York where it was placed in the mails and postmarked light strike red "New York 2 cts. May 12" drop rate c.d.s., Fine-Very Fine. Estimate 400 - 600
James Eden was an African American, part of a large African Methodist congregation in Charleston, S.C. that was forced by local political sentiment to disband. He and many of the members of the congregation emigrated to Liberia in 1833.
