Lot 1474

1863, 2¢ black (73), average single cork canceled and tied by "Boston, Mass. Feb. 15" c.d.s. on small mourning cover addressed locally to Rev. Samuel J. May, manuscript "$25.-enclosed & acknowledged" in the hand of the sender, enclosed black-bordered carte-de-viste with handwritten "Twenty five dollars for Mr. Garrison from (printed) Mrs. A.G. Farwell", Very Fine. Judging from the "& acknowledged" quite possibly a money letter. Estimate 200 - 300
Rev. Mary and William L. Garrison were both active abolitionists, Mary participated in the Underground Railroad, Garrison was the leader of the American Anti-Slavery Society. This was apparently a donation to Mr. Garrison's cause.
