Via Nicaragua./ Ahead of the mails./ Leland, blue truncated box handstamp, bearing 3¢ dull red (11) bottom margin pair, in at top, dry print, tied by "STEAM/SHIP" handstamp on buff cover to Portsmouth, R.I.; cover internally reinforced with similiar paper, Fine appearance. George Leland, later a partner with John McCombe in an express company, was originally a letter bag operator who copied the Vanderbilt slogan and handstamp format for his own local San Francisco service.
