Chief of the Appointment Bureau, Dietz type I with Clements signature on 6¢ green entire (U14) to Raleigh, N.D., clear "Richmond Va. Sep. 28" c.d.s. and matching "Free"; cover with skillful repairs at edges and flap reattached, Very Fine appearance, very rare. Accompanying the cover is a note from a soldier in the 9th N.J. Vols. to DR. J.A. Petrie: "found by me in the Post Office at Raleigh N.C. April 17th 1865, immediately after evacuation of the city by the rebel General Johnston and its occupation by Gen. Sherman". The 6¢ green is unlisted with a type I imprint.
