1855, 10¢ green, type III (15), mostly large margins, tied by black pen strokes on 1857 cover to Audincourt, France, with "Breaux's Bridge La. Apr 27 (manuscript day)" c.d.s., "New 18 York May 9" exchange and red French transit c.d.s, manuscript "16" decimes due, two French backstamps, Very Fine, rare use from a small Louisiana town. Estimate 400 - 500
A double rate cover on which the sender attempted to pay double the 5¢ shore to ship rate to France by British mail (this rate had ended on April 1). The New York exchange office treated it as unpaid and the letter went by American packet, debiting France at the rate of 9¢ per ½oz.
