Canada, Stampless folded letter to England, from Port Hope, U.C. to London, postmarked red Port Hope broken circle, Nov 17, 1855, black boxed "REGISTERED", red "PAID 8d Stg." and "10d Cy.", backstamped Toronto Nov 18, with red British crowned "REGISTERED" and manuscript "6" (d) due on front.

Postage was 8d sterling or 10d currency by British Packet via Boston. Until April of 1859 the fee for registration within the U.K. could not be prepaid in Canada. Hence the due "6" marking indicating the 6d U.K. registry fee which had to be paid by the addressee.
