Canada, Stampless cover, from the Prosser correspondence sent from London, U.C. to New York, postmarked London on Oct 1, 1856 with black straight line "REGISTERED" and two strikes red straight line "PAID", one followed by red manuscript "15" (cents), the other with "3+6=9" (pence sterling), and "CANADA" in arc exchange marking, red manuscript registration number "8-1491" indicates arrival in New York on the 8th and is the only U.S. marking; small repaired nick at top, where the cover has been slightly reduced, and the flap is missing, otherwise a Very Fine and unusual in that neither the postage nor the registry fee were paid with stamps.

The registered mail agreement between Canada and the U.S. took effect on October 1, 1856. The postage rate remained at 6d sterling (10¢ currency) per half-ounce while the registry fee was set at 3d (5¢). This cover, which shows the combined postage and the registry fee in both currencies, was mailed on the 4th day of cross-border registered mail service.
