Great Britain, 1790 (Jan. 4) folded letter to Madeira with pre-printed "General Post Office" notice, of two letters having arrived by ship and requiring postage of 5 pence each before these can be forwarded, slight aging, believed to be the earliest example of these notices thought to have been introduced in 1789; this "Detained for Postage" system introduced for the collection of money on mail from overseas transiting London for continental Europe and Colonies marks the origin of the Postage Due system.
