1847, 5¢ red brown and 10¢ black (1, 2), single and horizontal pair respectively, ample margins, canceled and tied by blue grids and red "3" credit handstamps on 1849 folded letter to Edinburgh, Scotland, paying the recently introduced 24¢ British treaty rate with the inevitable 1¢ overpayment, blue "Buffalo N.Y. Aug. 21" double oval with tear drop ornaments, credit mark repeated at upper right with pencil "24" above it, probably carried on the Hermann which departed New York August 20th, red Edinburgh Sep. 5 receiving postmark; 5¢ with pressed-out file crease, left 10¢ small tear at bottom, cover with some natural bleach spots affecting stamps, Very Fine appearance. Illustrated in color in Alexander, and featured in Smithsonian March 2003, page 52, "America's First Stamp".
